Skin cells face special conditions in their microenvironment including pH, temperature, humidity, sebum level, oxidative stress, diet, resident immune cells and infectious exposure. The skin has a high turnover of cells as it is affected by environmental stresses, nutrient and oxygen shortage. The survival mechanism is called generically autophagy, which controls the delicate balance in immunoregulation and tolerance. Autophagy is a recycling path preserved during evolution because it is responsible for the degradation and reuse of proteins and cellular organelles. This cleaning system seems to be inversely and invariably related to the aging process. An important autophagy signaling pathway is the target of the rapamycin 1 complex (TORC1),a negative regulator of autophagy. Inhibition of TORC1 may reduce the production of cellular proteins that may contribute to the deleterious accumulation observed in aging. Interestingly, many study systems have already shown that inhibition of TORC1 increases longevity.

In addition the autophagic activity decreases during the natural aging of the individuals. It is noted that modulating autophagy seems to be an ideal process for controlling skin aging and consequently it is possible that anti-aging cosmetic appeals based on autophagy modulation are not just a trend but lead generations of new ingredients for formulators to develop high-performance products.In this lecture we will analyze both the basic mechanisms of autophagy and applications for cosmetic area.

Human skin is considered one of the largest organs in the body and is one of the ways we interact with our surrounding environment. The optical characteristics of the skin, determined by its spectral reflectance, contribute to the perception of health and aging. For just over a decade,the use of broad spectrum reflectance, or hyperspectral imaging, has been developed and optimized. Today the application of the broad electromagnetic spectrum with 3D mapping and multivariate analysis is a powerful tool for the cosmetic segment, especially in the area of Sun Care. Real-time studies on melanin kinetics, oxygen concentration and skin protein structures are part of the great possibilities of using this robust tool.

The Law of Biodiversity in Brazil brought as main promise, the bureaucratic disentanglement for research and innovation using active ingredients of Brazilian biodiversity. In the cosmetics sector, we know that natural ingredients have great potential, especially the active ingredients of Brazil, which in addition to making new discoveries, have a very interesting marketing appeal, not only for the Brazilian consumer, but also for the international market. The presentation will show how Brazilian regulations bring great opportunities for industries compared to other international standards and their impacts are less than what is said.
